Planescape: Bastions of the Possible - Ahv-Kaimeri

Among a bewildering assortment of intermixed gemstones and mineral of all types lies Ahv-Kaimeri, third of the four Bastions of te Possible. A vast, intricately-shaped hollow carved out of living crystal, the Spindle of Purity is at once the most inconspicuous of the four Bastions, and the most well-protected. This well served the interests of the Wayfinders of the Infinite, who intended Ahv-Kaimeri as a place to store their most valued treasures, as well as those creations that might prove to be dangerous.

Ahv-Kaimeri was shaped as a great, spiraling chamber hollowed from the living mineral, almost like the imprint of some gigantic nautilus-like snailshell. The exterior of the citadel is an imbued surface of thin but unbreakable walls of force, semi-translucent and lit with a soft glow almost absorbed completely by the surrounding crystal. The force barrier provides protection from mundane and magical attacks alike, and also blocks the bastion away from incursion by elementals native to the plane, that would otherwise be able to easily glide through the surrounding mineral.

Though a potent protection, this barrier has begun to fail in several locations - its intricate contourings and powerful auras were never intended to endure across the centuries without any sort of maintanence, and small holes have been eroded away in many places. Between these flaws in the protective barrier, and Ahv-Kaimeri's relative vulnerability to planeshifting and teleportation magics, the Spindle of Purity is now a relatively easy place to gain entry to.

Of course, just because the Spindle is now easy to enter does not mean it is a safe place to be – far from it. Aside from the possibility of an inquisitive visitor attracting the unwelcome attentions of nearby mineral denizens, an incursion into Ahv-Kaimeri also risks running afoul of the dust being that now resides there. Perhaps the most terrible creation of the Doomguard’s attack on the Wayfinder sectso many centuries ago, this agglomeration of elemental magic is animate, possessed of a hunter’s cunning, and inimical to all forms of life it runs across. Should any other lifeform enter the Spindle, sooner or later the dust creature will sense the intrusion and respond with hostile intent.

The dust creature is massive – several dozen tons of fine silt and powder, able to disperse into a low-density creature of truly colossal size,or condense itself into a smaller form with truly monstrous strength and ferocity. It can attempt to either slam opponents into a battered pulp or merely pour itself over them in order to smother them, and is apparently nearly immune to any form of weapon or energy attack. If its prey flees, it will pursue – always at a speed slightly slower than the fleeing individual, no matter how quickly that opponent can move. Of course, the dust being will never grow exhausted or make a wrong turn, unlike its victim, making the long-term outcome of any such chase a foregone conclusion.

With such a formidable foe, why dare the Spindle of Purity at all, then? The answer’s simple – treasure. This is where the greatest prizes and creations of the Wayfinders were brought, during their short history; and despite the efforts of many treasure hunters, many of these treasures still remain here. Magic both powerful and unique can be found here, if the searcher is cunning, lucky and brave – though things less useful and benign surely wait as well. Of course, if someone is desperate for an answer that cannot be found anywhere else, the reward may be worth the risk...
